SmartLock with trusted location has been working for a few days. Thankfully the fingerprint is fast but it's still annoying that it doesn't work as designed. Make sure your Trusted Places are disabled as well. But for each of them I also set another location like suggested in step 9. The Play Services update was already on my current phone a Pixel , my old phone a Nexus 6P , and my wife's phone a Nexus 5X -- and yet Trusted Places still failed to work for any of those devices. It's so unintuitive but apparently when you are in a trusted place, you want to swipe anywhere on the lock screen except the lock! Might be different for the Surge.
Just remember that your phone doesn't know who is holding it, just where it's being held and will unlock itself for anyone inside a Trusted Place. I've only had the S7 a couple of days and hadn't gotten any trusted devices to keep it unlocked reliably. You can try a few different things to get it working again. Click Update when done and see if it works now. Take a minute and set up a good screen lock and use Smart Lock to make things easy if you haven't already! I never deleted my home location either but did refresh it in maps just to make sure.
