Where the key flips open you can see a small recess about where the line of the trunck switch. When this function becomes inconsistent, it's is usually due to the battery inside these keys wearing out. One thing you want to avoid if possible is making sure not to let your key fob battery wear out completely. I'm glad I tried out the suggestions here as I've saved myself a pile of grief and expense. Open the key as you would to sue it. Glad to hear it worked for you.
It is a little tight so you will have to force which is normal. If there is no way into the vehicle whatever you try, assuming its not deadlocked, an auto locksmith can come out with a pump wedge and use it to lever the top of drivers door out just enough for a grabber to pull the handle, if deadlocked then hope your rear windows have a manual winder. I called an auto locksmith who said that the lock on the door had been changed! Thanks for the replies folks! I also treat all door seals with silicone spray to prevent seals freezing. Pulling both handles or slamming the door will release it and it will start working again. The key fob is two pieces. I cut thin strips and stuck them to the area where the glovebox door overlaps the glovebox opening, I put one on each side top and bottom 4 in total , this tightens up the closing of the glovebox but doesn't restrict it. Just thought I would update this. This has sorted things for me.

Until you gain access to the car you obviously wont know if its a car battery problem. Use a voltmeter or mutlimeter to check the battery voltage red lead on positive pole; black on negative; range on 0-50V. Both nearside passenger doors won't open from the outside, after unlocking the car with the remote control key. Suggest you get the haynes manual yes there is one for the B6. Luckily Joe has been through this situation before and managed to get it open again , but I had to bite the bigger bullet and buy a new module for 165 quid ouch. Cheers, Steve Door handle very very loose. I ended up taking the door skin off and removing the mechanism. After opening and closing I have found out the following:- if the door is locked and the handle is pulled, it will stop working form the outside. Think the original problem was with the central locking?? After the first attempt I couldn't seem to get it to come off from the lock end. If I just hit the button like I would for the door lock, it doesn't work. The garage diagnosed a wiring loom problem not covered by extended warrantee!! Could be something like buttons were pressed too many times out of range. I think my issue is with the solder points on the lock mechanism from slaming the door too hard. You aren't near Belfast are you? No bloody lie the day after that was fixed the other back door went to. .
Took it back to garage who simply opened from the inside and slammed it - which sorted it. Software just doesn't decide to do one thing consistently for 3 years and then throw a wobbler.
